An academic epidemic continues in our nation’s high schools. It can only be addressed through school reform and redefining student engagement and learning outcomes. According to one report, “Nearly 6.2 million students in the United States between the ages of 16 and 24 in 2007 dropped out of high school, fueling a report called ‘a persistent high school dropout crisis.’
President Obama recently pledged to tackle the dropout rate of American high school students, calling it an economic imperative if the United States intends to remain competitive in the global society.
Sadly, according to a report prepared for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation reported,
• 70 % of dropouts were confident they could have graduated
• 81% recognized graduating was vital to their success
• 66% said they would have worked harder if expectations were higher
“We know that the success of every American will be tied more closely than ever before to the level of education that they achieve,” Mr. Obama said. “The jobs will go to the people with the knowledge and the skills to do them. It’s that simple."

Many parents are not aware that the traditional teaching methods they experienced in school are being replaced, and that new skills are now required to compete for grades. Project-based learning (PBL) is a new concept in education being widely implemented around the country and the world. With more teachers assigning projects, the task of doing multiple and simultaneous classroom projects is a common predicament.
